This book WRECKED ME. R.K. Lilley is pure magic! Not that I am surprised, the Tristan and Danika series is one of my all time favorites, but after The Wild Side books I had drawn away from Lilley for a bit. But after my girlie Jasmine from Reading Escapade told me she loved this and that it was super angsty, I had to read it! And I read it in 5 hours. Stayed up until 2:30 AM and everything. This is R. K. Lilley at her best!

Scarlett and Dante were childhood loves. Now they hate each others guts. With the benefit of occasional hate sex. But Dante comes in search of Scarlett with news of a family friend and Scarlett finds herself traveling back to her hometown and to Dante. That's all I can really say without spoiling anything for you, it's best if you go into this book knowing less.

Scarlett and Dante ruined each other, and it only got worse over the years. Both cannot find it within them to forgive the other, but neither one of them have gotten over each other either. The plot is a big mystery to the reader with little tidbits being revealed in the present, and through flashbacks interspersed throughout the book.

This book was so beyond angsty and I ate it all up! Lilley is the master of angst, so many points in the book where I felt like my heart had been ripped out of my chest and I loved every minute of it!

Gah... I cannot believe I am writing a two star review for an RK Lilley book/series. Let me start off by saying I REALLY loved the Up In The Air series...and the Tristan & Danika series just...was... incredible. I have only found one or two others series that can even compare. But Breaking Him and Breaking Her were just not up to par. The drama was so over the top in pretty much all aspects of the books it just seemed so unrealistic to me. I had a hard time finishing the second book, and towards the end of the first book and through the whole second book did a lot of skimming to get to the end. The whole first book takes places over a matter of just a few days and it seemed like there was so much unnecessary "filler" that it got to be annoying. Hate to say it, but wish I wouldn't have purchased. Sorry RK Lilley -- I still love you!
Why didn’t someone tell me about R.K. Lilley, and specifically about Breaking Him, before now?! This story is like book crack—positively addictive and emotionally lethal. It gutted me time and time again, and I couldn’t get enough.

Scarlett is the very definition of a badass heroine. She’s a survivor fearless, strong, calculating, and quick-tempered. Despite poverty, bullying, abandonment, and injustice, she rises from the ashes again and again—with fists flying if necessary. Dante comes from wealth, but his spirit is just as wounded and his anger just as easily tapped as Scarlett’s. They form a bond in fourth grade when he takes on the role of her protector, and the two become inseparable. Their friendship naturally becomes romantic as they grow older. It’s an epic love story of two scarred soulmates, trapped in a passionate and volatile relationship.

The story alternates between the past and present. Both are equally fascinating, but I was eager to learn exactly what went down between Dante and Scarlett to cause their relationship to implode in such a drastic way. The way they slice each other with words is vicious—and wonderful. I’m an angst whore so I loved every minute of the barbs, backstabbing, conniving, jealousy, and hate. I equally enjoyed the passion, vulnerability, and deeply sensual aspects. There are some seriously hot sex scenes, but they aren’t gratuitous or over-abundant. They enhance this multi-faceted story.

R.K. Lilley is an exceptional storyteller. The narrative—told strictly from Scarlett’s point of view—is steady and impactful. There’s a landmine of history that includes some major blows, but only small pieces are unearthed at a time. It was more than enough to keep me hooked. There’s also a large cast of complex characters that are extremely well-developed and intriguing. The story gets stronger as it progresses, and by the end I was chomping at the bit to fill in the gaps. If you think you’re going to get even half of your questions answered by the end, think again. Trust me. You’ll want to have Breaking Her, the second book in this duet, on hand.
RK Lilley is a one-click, don't bother reading the synopsis type of author for me. I first read Breaking Him when it was published nearly 2 years ago. The experience was so gut-wrenchingly awesome, that I have resisted reading Breaking Her (the 2nd book of this duet), because I knew to do that book justice I'd have to re-read Breaking Him first - and my heart couldn't handle it.
Every time I'd scroll through my next-book-to-read choices, I could never manage to click on this series. There is SO much emotion in this first book - heartbreak and betrayal and LOVE that I could never summon the strength to tackle book it again.
Until today.
I devoured it in just a few hours. I was in equal parts loving and hating this book (fitting really), because I don't like 2nd chance angsty books. I hate living someone's heartbreak, it makes me too emotional. But this was RK Lilley and her books are freaking awesome, so I made an exception.
I'll start Breaking Her tomorrow and I have no doubt I'll be writing another 5 star review.

I highly recommend Breaking Him if you like well written emotional love stories, with intriguing and unique strong characters.
