This is a tough one to review. I love everything that Tepper writes, and right up to the last 20 pages, this was no exception. As always, her world building is first rate. As always, I get lost enough in her excellent prose to cheer the heroes and boo the villains even while they remain a bit more two dimensional than most of her characters. And Tepper can usually be relied upon to pull off a Deus Ex Machina better than anyone this side of Doctor Who.

This time, though, the Deus fell, for me, more than a little flat. I agree completely with most of the ideas put forth in the last pages...but even so I was ready to throw the book across the room. Absolutely worth a read for the beginning and middle, but perhaps make up your own, more satisfying, ending.

Everything written by Teller is superb!!!!!!!! Highly recommended.
Complicated in first 3rd but the establishment of character, plot, and themes was totally worth it! She rarely disappoints a craving for novel outcomes.
Not hard Sci-Fi, but rather Speculative Fiction. This is a kind of feminist "The Group" with a fantasy edge. A little heavy-handed at times, but still good, as Tepper usually is. Worth the read.
Very different from Gate to Women's Country but held my interest.
One of her best. This is a terrific book for Tepper fans and for everyone else. It's probably one of the best for someone getting an "intro" to her work.
I greatly enjoyed this intriguing book with two related stories. First is the story of Nell Latimer, a contemporary scientist, sleeping and waking for 1000 years in the hideaway that protected a handful of scientists from an asteroid strike. The other is Disme Latimer, who lives in the post-apocalyptic, authoritarian civilization that is being corroded from beneath by the ancient god, Bael, and his minions.The story is an interesting mix between hard sci-fi [Armageddon disaster, cold-sleep etc.] magic and religion. A very complex novel, and some of it gets unwieldy at the end, but it’s fun to read and basically very satisfying.
I love Tepper's books. They are rich, and satisfying, leaving a lot of deep thought and hope behind that humans are not yet hopeless. I read straight through the night on this one.Quite a few of her books deal with ecological consequences, and it frequently takes alien intervention to set humans on the right path. Her characters are wholly believable, and the endings are perfect.
